Gonzaga holds off Portland

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

01/10/2010 - Portland, OR (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Matt Bouldin scored 20 points and dished out nine assists, as 19th-ranked Gonzaga survived Portland, 81-78, in the West Coast Conference opener for both schools at Chiles Center.

Elias Harris had 18 points for the Bulldogs (12-3, 1-0 WCC), winners in four straight games. Kelly Olynyk added 13 points and Bol Kong connected for 12 points but missed two free throws in the final seconds, which opened the door for a game-tying shot by Portland.

Robin Smeulders posted a game-best 24 points for the Pilots (9-6, 0-1), who had their two-game win streak halted. Jared Stohl scored 18 points -- all from beyond the arc with a 6-for-9 performance -- but barely missed a game-tying shot as time expired.

Nik Raivio contributed 15 points in a losing cause.

Smeulders hit a shot with 2:03 remaining in the contest and Portland came within 73-68, before Olynyk hit both of his chances from the line and Smeulders struck with 34 ticks left.

Bouldin went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe around a Stohl three and Gonzaga led 79-73 with 24 seconds to play. Raivio sank a shot on the next possession, but Bouldin went back to the line and hit two for a six-point game with 17 seconds left.

T.J. Campbell missed a layup but Stohl drained one from long distance for a three-point contest. Kong then failed on both of his free throws with 4.6 seconds on the clock, leaving the rebound for Ethan Niedermayer, who passed ahead to Stohl. His desperation three had enough distance but bounced off the rim as time expired.

Olynyk's deuce after the midway point of the first half opened up a 19-9 edge for the Bulldogs, but the home team responded from there.

Luke Sikma's bucket in the paint pulled Portland within 32-30 with 3:42 left, but Gonzaga ripped off a 10-2 run to go up by 10 ending Bouldin's jumper with 1:06 to go.

The Pilots finished the half with four straight points to climb within 42-36 at the break.

Game Notes

Gonzaga leads the series, 84-65, and has won 13 consecutive meetings...Bouldin wound up making 10-of-11 attempts from the charity stripe...Sikma finished with seven points and seven rebounds for Portland.
