Wolves lose Maierhofer to hernia surgery

01/12/2010 - Wolverhampton, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Wolverhampton will be without Stefan Maierhofer for two weeks following hernia surgery in Germany.

The Austria international has made eight Premier League appearances - but only one start - since arriving at Molineux from Rapid Vienna last August.

His last appearance was during the 2-0 defeat at Manchester United on December 15 when manager Mick McCarthy was criticized for naming a weakened team.

But after failing to shake off the groin problem during a period of rest over the festive period, Maierhofer has been sent for surgery in Munich.

"Stefan is having a hernia operation this week," McCarthy told the club's official website. "He's been struggling with the hernia for some time so he needs to get it sorted out, then he can come back when he's fully-fit."

The club's head of medical, Steve Kemp, added: "Stefan was struggling with weakness in his abdomen which is quote common for footballers.

"The decision was taken to address the problem rather than leave it any longer.

"He will fly out on Thursday to see a renowned specialist in Munich and have the operation on Friday."
